Tall Grass Prairie

While staying at Osage Hills State Park we decided to take a small day trip to Pawhuska, OK and visit the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve it was so fitting since we have been using the Prairie Primer curriculum this year, we had a lot of things to talk about and study while at the preserve. My favorite things was the buffalo and of course since we have studied them we found out that their true name is bison not buffalo. They had over 2600 bison just wondering around on the prairie and it was beautiful with the baby calves running around...we loved it.

Favorite home school quote-Little House on the Prairie

This is a pic of the boys...they didn't get into it as much as us girls did but they enjoyed the coffee!

This is my all time favorite home school quote!

“I believe it would be much better for everyone if children were given their start in education at home. No one understands a child as well as his mother, and children are so different that they need individual training and study. A teacher with a room full of pupils cannot do this. At home, too, they are in their mother’s care. She can keep them from learning immoral things from other children.” ~Laura Ingalls Wilder

Prairie Primer and lincoln logs

We are still making our way through the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder with the Prairie Primer curriculum. This has been such a fun year the kids have learned about the 5 kingdoms, learning the states and their capitals, all about the human eye, how to sew, how frontier people lived, all about how the railroads changed the US, Braille, cooking and many many other things. We started getting the books on CD from our library so we could crochet while we all listened to the stories and the kids will also play with their Lincoln Logs while we listen and they have become very good at designing new log houses. Here are a few of my favorites!

First Day of Homeschool 2009-2010

Notice that Kenzie has her Homeschool Girl shirt on for the 1st day!

Since we are studying the Prairie Primer I gave each of them a "Prairie" pencil sharpener and pencil from the Little House gift shop.

The kids are really excited about school this year because we normally use My Father's World curriculum but decided to take a break from it this year and we are using the Prairie Primer which is based on The Little House on the Prairie series of books. We have several friends and family that are using it this year too so I am hoping we can all get together and do some of the larger projects with the "Prairie Primer's". So far this year we have made butter and cheese, made Indian teepee's, homemade bread, we washed some clothes by hand to see how hard it was with out a machine, made molasses cookies, and we are working on Little House in the Big Woods lap books right now.
We also started a new art curriculum because I didn't think they were getting very much out of the art class that they took last year with Young Rembrandt's. This year we are using a curriculum from How Great Thou Art that has DVDs and you watch the lesson and then do the work and we are using the I Can Do All Things set. I bought enough supplies so that I can do art with the kids. We really enjoy our art time together.
We are also using a great science curriculum this year from Apologia and it's the zoology 2 book called Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day and the kids LOVE science so much that I think we will probably finish it up before Christmas and then start on another book for the new year. Thanks for reading about some of our school curriculum this year and if you have any great curriculum or ideas for home school then leave me a comment!

Little House on the Prairie

Many thanks to our friend Christy who told us about this really cool festival at the Little House on the Prairie We had the best time! The kids built then flew kites, colored paper dolls, colored a square for a quilt, rode 2 tractor rides, pumped water, ground corn, they LOVED the Little house that Laura and her family lived in (I just found out that it was re-created on the exact spot as the old house), saw the Indians dance, and were in a watermelon eating contest! What a busy day! When we just getting out of the car and hadn't even made it into the festival yet Kevin saw the car next to us was stuck in the mud and said he would help the people push the car out. Well, the car spun mud ALL over him from head to toe (I should have taken a picture) anyway, his good deed for the day made him extremely muddy but he washed it off and didn't let it ruin our fun day!
