The super moon

March 19th, 2011 was the first super moon in 18 years.

NASA says, the Moon "will be around 17,000 miles (27,359 km) closer than usual as it rounds Earth in its elliptical orbit." Don't get too excited; that's still 221,567 miles (356,578 km) from Earth, so it's not exactly "close." The effect of this change of distance is that the Full Moon will be appear 14% bigger than usual.

The kids, Kevin and I went outside and looked at it.  It was beautiful and you could see more detail but I think we expected it to look quite a bit larger.  We took a bunch of pictures of it and had a couple turn out pretty good!

Great photos. My photos of the moon never turn out so I didn't bother. I knew someone would have a great photo. It was pretty big and bright at our house. At MIL's just 10 miles away they said it started out orange, not sure about that though. Anyway it was a fun evening. Glad your family enjoyed it too.

It WAS so beautiful. It was yellow hear in the desert, with all the dirt hazeyness, but it was still amazing! Great Pics!

Great pictures. I didn't know that the huge moon was called a supermoon!

Thanks for visiting me at A Season for All Things. I love hooking up with other homeschoolers. We began using My Father's World in 8th grade and up. Good program, but unfortunately, my youngest is not a "read and remember" or a reader to keep up with their high school program. My older two really enjoyed the program.

I'm your newest follower and look forward to reading more of your posts. ~ Ellen

Yay, isn't this amazing? You taking a peek at the night sky made me think of our kiddos when they were small. We drove to the mountains to see a Halley's and Hale-Bopp in the late 90s. That was so much fun!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

It was my birthday on the night of the "super" moon. I agree with everything you said about its mildly disappointing display.

With a bit of trivia and photo this post is just enough to be informative. The enlarged photo seems like a view from a telescope. Nice one.
