AIMS-From Head to Toe

AIMS is a non-profit foundation dedicated to helping teachers give students a solid conceptual understanding of math and science.  I love AIMS because it's easy for me to understand as the teacher and they make it fun by offering a wide array of worksheets, CD Rom's, workbooks and any type of experiment items that engage your child and make them want to learn.  Since receiving From Head to Toe to review both of my kids are asking if today is a science day every single day, they love AIMS that much!

From Head to Toe is recommended for 5th-9th graders but my 4th grader is enjoying it and hasn't said one thing about it being to hard for him.  AIMS offers this in a book form and a PDF so you can download it and not have to wait on shipping but I prefer the book form because it comes with a CD ROM and you can print several worksheets off at one time.  The cost for either option is $24.95.  There are 27 activities in this 288 page book and it will guide students in explorations of the systems and senses of the human body. Students will look at each of the following systems:
~Nervous
~Circulatory
~Respiratory
~Digestive
~Urinary
~Musculoskeletal

They will also explore how our sensory organs provide us information about our world.

Students will be engaged as they create models for each system and see firsthand how things really work. In the activity “Breathe In, Breathe Out,” students will use a two-liter bottle, balloons and straws to build their own set of “lungs” and to see what happens as air is inhaled and exhaled. Here's our picture of this activity.

Whether building a model heart or acting out the actions of neurons as they transmit messages to and from the brain, From Head to Toe provides a broad, complete look of the human body that will engage students as they learn about their magnificent bodies.

Apologia: Who am I?

I don't know if you are like me but when I hear the word Apologia I automatically think of science curriculum.  I found out that Apologia offers the homeschooler many different curriculums, not just science.  They have geography, writing curriculum and even a worldview study.   So, when I had the opportunity to review Who am I? I wasn't really sure what to expect. This text is designed for ages 6-14 year olds and covers the topic of healthy self image based on biblical truths.  My 11 year old daughter, Makenzie and I have been pleasantly surprised, we are really enjoying this special time together reading and studying.  She loves the notebooking journal which contains lesson plans, writing prompts, puzzles and has already started filling it up!

We are really enjoying our mommy/daughter time exploring Who Am I?  We received the text book ($39), the note booking journal ($24), a copy of the book on a MP3 CD ($19) was also included and the entire book is read by Marissa Leinart. This makes it nice for auditory learners as well as allowing for more independent study. Please note that the CD only plays on a MP3 compatible device or on a computer. We also received the coloring book ($8), I feel this is for younger children that might be sitting in and learning with an older child but it can be used as part of the curriculum if you choose to utilize it.

This is book 2 in a 3 book series.  Book 1 is Who is God?  and Book 3 is Who Is  My Neighbor?  and it covers biblical servant-hood. They have plans for book 4 to come out sometime this year and it will be What on Earth Can I Do?  and it will cover biblical stewardship.
