Why Nichole Wrote Every Mile Mattered

“For anyone who has been on a faith journey for some time, walked the long road with Jesus, the peaks and valleys, the deep joy and deep sorrows, the confusion and questioning, the moments of certainty and gratitude, every mile, every bump, bruise and beautiful encounter… these songs are for you. For both of us.
There comes a time in your life and in your faith where it makes sense to look back at what’s behind you. Looking over your shoulder at where you’ve been, what you’ve learned, what you thought you knew, but didn’t, what you’d change, and what you wouldn’t. That’s where I’ve been. Taking spiritual inventory.  Examining what I thought I understood, but didn’t, what I got right and what I might still be getting wrong.
In that moment, the looking back, it is easy for us to judge ourselves. To look at certain decisions or beliefs or experiences and feel regret. Wishing that a certain chapter ended differently. Wishing I’d taken a right instead of a left at that fork in the road. Wishing I could re-write history. Rewind the tape. It’s only natural to glance at the miles in the rear view mirror, and see all the “if onlys.”
Sharing from my heart

As I was reading and doing some research about Nichole I read that she considers each of these songs as mile markers.  I'm at a point in my life where I understand exactly what she's talking about.  Her song Slow Down is about kids growing up, but you want them to slow down and features her daughter Pepper singing with her. I can definitely relate since my children aren't kids anymore, they're teenagers now, Kenzie is in her senior year of high school and Kylan will be a sophomore.  This is a mile marker for our family, next year Kenzie is off to college and I will be homeschooling 1 child for the first time ever.  As a matter of fact, later on today Kenzie and I will be making a road trip to Oklahoma City to stay the night with friends and then head off tomorrow morning to tour the OU campus in Norman, you better believe we will have this CD playing!  Another mile marker is our 25 year anniversary is coming up on September 5th and we're celebrating by going on a cruise with our best friends and no children.  WOW, how times change.
In my spiritual life I can tell that I'm also at another mile marker as well and that's where Every Mile Mattered comes in and became personal to me.
God's endless love and protection has changed my life drastically over my 44 years of living. Nicole is correct in saying, "Dear me, you did not learn this in a day or two or three so ask a lot of questions." If I could go back and talk to my younger self I would say ask questions more often and learn from others, I was such a know it all and when I look back it was just grace that got me through.  As a traveler this CD speaks to my soul.
